(AP Photo)June 10, 2010 -- -- Jennifer Lopez was seen in Times Square today helping the kids. One of the latest celebrities who are promoting the positive activities of the Boys & Girls Clubs, Lopez is allowing her image, as a kid, to be on the billboards.

The first billboard for her campaign is in the heart of Times Square. The Simple billboard stresses the importance of the organization and why people need to get involved. Jennifer Lopez’s first start in the Boys and Girls Club was Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club in the Bronx. She found her first love of music in this setting and wanted to encourage others to be part of this organization.

Having a billboard in Times Square is an honor for anyone in the entertainment business. Allowing the Boys and Girls Clubs of America to use her image to help other kids who need a start in the arts, business or to get off of the streets is a wonderful thing to do.

  Bravo JLo!

Halle Berry to be on Vogue's September cover

Hollywood beauty Halle Berry will become the first black woman to grace fashion bible Vogue's all-important September isue.

The issue is the most important of the year as it showcases the autumn/winter trends, and brings in the maximum revenue for Vogue with most pages of advertising .

The fashion magazine's decision to put the 41-year-old actress on the cover has been hailed as a landmark, reported Daily Mail online.

While Vogue has had black women on the cover before, the numbers are few and far between.

Beverly Johnson was the first black woman on a Vogue cover, in 1974 and was followed by Naomi Campbell, athlete Marion Jones, model Liya Kebede, actress Jennifer Hudson and first lady Michelle Obama.

Racism in fashion was in news again recently with the publication of Claudia Schiffer's photographs where she is dressed up as a black woman by Karl Lagerfeld.

In the past black supermodel Naomi Campbell has spoken about latent racism in the fashion industry, which she said gives preference to "blond, blue-eyed models" over black women.

"You know, the American president may be black, but as a black woman, I am still an exception in this business. I always have to work harder to be treated equally," she had said in an interview.

World Cup: South Africa's Fashion Designers Go Beyond Shakira's 'Waka Waka' T-Shirt

South African TV actress, Gerry Rantseli-Elsdon wears a dress designed by Johannesburg-based fashion duo, RjKay Creations. Photo: Natalie Payne/SA Fashion Week.

When Shakira sang Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) at the opening of the World Cup Soccer Tournament, she was wearing a sexy African-inspired print number with a skirt of tassles created for her by Italian designer Roberto Cavalli.

To sell her "Waka Waka" soccer-themed T-shirts, Shakira partnered with Mango, one of Spain's largest fashion companies. Proceeds from their sale will benefit the country's early education initiatives. "The true spirit of this World Cup means making a lasting contribution," Shakira said.

And while South Africans embrace the Colombian singer's spirit of giving back to their country, some fashion designers wish that they had been given the opportunity to collaborate with her -- or FIFA -- on the T-shirt collection. After all, what good is hosting a major international tournament in your country if you can't even embrace the local artisans?

Instead of accepting that South Africa is merely the stage for the international soccer tournament, a group of fashion designers led by Lucilla Booyzen, the founder and director of SA Fashion Week, have created the kind of clothing they think soccer fans should wear.

"Soccer is very T-shirt oriented and I'm very surprised that FIFA have never taken it to another level and involved designers in the host countries to see what they can come up with," Booyzen told StyleList. "Especially when they go to a country that is not a First World country, there should be more sensitivity around job creation."

With the world's gaze firmly set on the country, South Africa is experiencing an unprecedented surge of patriotism. "The designers felt that they needed to create a space or have a design voice," says Booyzen. "Not everybody wants to walk around wearing a soccer T-shirt."

Through Booyzen's encouragement, six designers have created patriotic ensembles. Most of which are dresses in the yellow and green of the local Bafana Bafana team to appeal to the numbers of female soccer fans.

Local celebrities and socialites recently modeled the patriotic frocks for a segment that is now on YouTube. Television star Gerry Rantseli-Elsdon wore a lemon yellow satin dress with green insets, puffed sleeves and a tulip skirt (approx $472) by Johannesburg-based designers Paledi Segapo and Reginald Molamu who design under the label RjKay Creations. Kelly Fisher, from the label K is for Kelly, created a shirtdress with batwing sleeves using the South African flag (approx. $50), and Anna-Mari Pretorius who designs the label Soda made a soccer-inspired skirtsuit -- a jacket that's cinched in the waist before flaring out over a slim, stretch skirt (approx. $162).

Fortunately for those unable to attend the World Cup, ordering these pieces online is not a problem.

"We made our collection at the last minute and only really to appeal to South African fans, but it would be great to advise the Brazilian designers for 2014," says Booyzen. "It should be about conscious capitalism."

Fashion Designer Ashish Soni on his ‘god’, Giorgio Armani

Almost 20 years ago, when I was a student at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Delhi, there was one man who we all considered god and that was Italian fashion designer, Giorgio Armani. I aspired to be like him and imbibe his style in my designs. There is a certain softness in his designs and his tailoring is extremely clean and perfect. Known for his menswear, Armani helped a lot of us build dreams. My exposure to the world of styles took a leap due to his fashion.

As a 20-something, I always wanted to wear ta black Armani suit. I had seen a lot of Hollywood celebs and football stars wearing it. After 10 years, when I was in my late 20s, I finally I got one for myself. I consider that moment of purchase to be a personal benchmark.

When I first visited one of his stores (in the UK), I was in complete awe. The touch and feel factor was so enticing. I am waiting for the day I could meet the man.

Over these years, I have developed my own sense of style. Even though Giorgio Armani did influence my sense of design but my sensibilities have changed. I respect him a lot as he was the first person who inspired me. But in two decades, I have had a lot of exposure and now I am inspired by Japanese and Belgian fashion amongst others.

John Goodman Slims Down The Old Fashioned Way

Actor John Goodman arrives at the 38th AFI Life Achievement Award honoring Mike Nichols held at Sony Pictures Studios on June 10, 2010 in Culver City, California. (Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images) John Goodman, known for his roles on the big screen, television, and Broadway, recently caught people’s attention on the red carpet due to his new slimmer figure. His publicist says it was done the old fashioned way.

USA Today spotted Goodman at the American Film Institute (AFI) awards show earlier in the week with a significant change in his body shape. One guest from the show guessed that he had lost close to 100 pounds, if not more.

Goodman’s publicist told USA Today that the long-time actor lost the weight through “diet and exercise.” The actor is set to play a new role on HBO in a series titled Treme. Goodman, 58, may possibly be in the best shape of his life.

Goodman has played a wide array of roles over the years but is known mostly for his long running role as Dan from the popular 1990’s family sitcom Roseanne. Before Roseanne, Goodman’s most successful role was 1984’s Revenge of the Nerds as a football coach.

Goodman has also been a frequent host on NBC’s Saturday Night Live as well as key figure in multiple Broadway and Off-Broadway performances. He is also known for his work in feature films; most notably with the Coen brothers, who created such Goodman hits as Raising Arizona and The Big Lebowski.

About 200 people gathered at Saya Lounge for a fashion show of contemporary styles to benefit the Living Vine, a local Christian maternity home.

The June 3 event was put together by Skirt! magazine and featured fashions from local boutiques and food from The Mirage.

Among those in attendance was Jovencio Mercado, the always gracious owner of Saya Lounge, located at 109 W. Broughton St.

Heading downstairs, I see the tall redhead Katherine Vanderspek behind the modern exotic bar. Katherine is one of the most gorgeous girls that I have met in Savannah. I ask her how her modeling career is going. A little less modeling and a lot more bartending isn't what the Maryland native and SCAD grad expected to be doing, but she says her amazing regular customers are helping her make up for what her architecture degree isn't covering.

Working with her is co-owner Heidi Mercado, wife of the equally attractive Jovencio. While taking a pic of them, I am approached by some of my favorite Savannah Newcomers members, Linda Meyer, Sylvia Severance and Marcy Brennan. After leaving their husbands at home for a girl's night out, they decided that a fashion show among friends is a perfect event for a Thursday night outing.

I had assumed that many of the guests would be the mothers or friends of the models, but that was an error on my part. As I met some of the ladies in the audience, I was surprised to find a diverse group of all ages.

They all seemed to have one thing in common: a love of fashion!

Four of the ladies I met are Liberty County natives Butterfly Parker, Marcia Bethel, Ethel Cummings and Cynthia Williams. A mail carrier, a custodian and two women of leisure, the ladies arrived early to get front-row viewing.

Representing the photography world are friends Siobhan Egan and Heather Shiver of blu owl photography.

A mutual friend, the best foodie photographer Erin Adams, introduced Siobhan and me a year ago.

I still have trouble pronouncing her name, but I love their work and Siobhan and Heather are gracious to be on the other side of the camera.

Waiting behind me is a gregarious group of ladies insisting on a group photo. They call themselves the YMCA Divas. Mary Ann Rodriguez, Cari Remion, Donna Orzada, Janet Pigott, Donna Chu, Beverly Poindexter, Linda Deen and Chris Thompson are eight energized women who pose individually on the catwalk before the fashion show starts.

Janet and Chris may have missed their calling. They love the camera and the camera loves them!

Walking through the growing crowd is Kevin Ambrose with Gaucho, which provided fashions for the show, and friend Terrence Burns.

Kevin and Terrence were seen chatting with B Street Salon stylist Whitney Manning.

  Living Vine

The Living Vine is a Christian maternity home that serves women in crisis pregnancies, offering support and a nuturing environment.

Some of the fabulous single ladies that work with Living Vine attended the fashion show. Jessica Purkey a summer missionary, Debbie Hanna, the administrator, and Audrey Wassel, resident director, were outside.

I had met these awesome women a few weeks earlier and have so much admiration for them and their work.

Sitting in a beautifully decorated alcove are Linda Sapp, Janet Wist, Charlene Nelson, Kathleen Rathbun and Susan Schueller. Ms. Charlene is a Living Vine board member and a passionate 14-year supporter of this Savannah nonprofit.

Beside these classy ladies are Susan Young, Dale Parker, Jimmy Parker and Carrie Hubbard. J. Parker Ltd. is one of the fashion show contributors and as usual, Mr. Parker is the best dressed man of the night!

After photographing stunning models in a montage of outfits, I manage to get a bite of The Mirages' culinary heaven, spanakopita. The Broughton street-based restaurant has mastered the Mediterranean classic. It's light, fluffy, buttery and perfect. The Mirage is owned by Mina Marsid.

In addition to the previously mentioned shops, Copper Penny Shooz, DC2 Designs, Copper Penny, Halo Models & Talent, also were contributors to the fashion show.

I can't wait for the next fashion show! Chat with you next week.
